LIFE ON MARS? from Hunky Dory

F F/E F7
It's a God awful small affair
       D
To the girl with the mousy hair
Gm Gm7
But her mummy is yelling no
C C7 F
And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen
        D
Now she walks through her sunken dream
Gm Gm7
To the seat with the clearest view
C C7
And she's hooked to the silver screen
Ab Ab#5
But the film is a saddening bore
Fm Ab7
For she's lived it ten times or more
Db A
She could spit in the eyes of fools
Bb B
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall

Now the workers have struck for fame
    C7
Cos Lennon's on sale again

NOTES:
This is very much a piano song and is quite difficult to get a good sounding
version on guitar. Pay careful attention to the chord shapes at the top. It
sounds awful if the wrong strings ring out. For the first four chords of every
verse, F F/E F7 D, try to only play the B, G and D strings of the guitar.
Picking is the best way to get it across nice and subtle. For the chorus you may
want to play the Bb up at the 6th fret so it's easier to get to the Eb:

Actually it's golden brown. I was taunted as a gingernut at school-equally inaccurate!!!

This is a pretty good chord chart, but there are a couple of questionable areas: Db A It's about to be writ again Bb B As they ask her to focus on In the above lines, the chords "A" and "B" give the correct bass notes, but not the correct harmonic profiles. They should be "Adim" and "Db7/Cb" (= enharmonic B) respectively. There are futher chord revoicings that can be used to more closely approximate the bass progression in the piano/strings, but what you have will suffice (with the above addenda). Cheers
URH 4/5/2003 - 23:37:12
i totaly agree with you

Thanx for your great site. About that song: Bowie met God...
MAXIME 2/1/2002 - 13:04:39
in the beginning (on "It's a God awfull..."), I suggest you to do: F Am Cm D Gm Gm7... The Ab#5 can be X3211X. Then,on "she could spit" It's Bb and A? (XX3221). On "As they ask" It's Bb and Db. This song is made by a genius, it's clear.
RICKY 26/10/2001 - 17:11:44
